Knowing Your Metal Frame Material

It is important when picking out a frame that you are familiar with the materials used. There are many choices to choose from such as nickel, aluminum, stainless steel and titanium.

It is estimated 10% of the population is allergic to contact with nickel which is commonly used in jewelry and often for eyeglass frames.

Stainless steel and titanium cause less sensitivities and are thought to be hypoallergenic.  To reduce skin reactions, choose frames made from these materials. Titanium has the advantage of being strong and extremely light in weight.

If you are already having a reaction, here are some tips that might help to reduce its severity:
Apply a clear coat finish to the frame.
Place heat-shrink tubing over the temples.

Additionally, allergic reactions can occur from silicon and latex material nose pads and lens liners that are set into the groove of a frame to make a loose lens more secure.

If nose pads are the problem replace them with titanium nose pads, crystal nose pads or gold-plated nose pads.  If you are sensitive to latex, a liquid liner should not be applied to your frame to secure the lens.
